"The Source" Bankruptcy Petition Prevents Auction

Plans to auction off shares of The Source Magazine by Textron Financial came to a halt yesterday (July 27) after three creditors filed an involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition against The Source Enterprises.
According to The New York Post, entertainment lawyer L.Londell McMillan, who was previously hired by former Source owners David Mays and Raymond "Benzino" Scott during their power struggle with the magazine's financial investors, has teamed with two other creditors, Brooklyn resident David Villorente and Encino, CA firm
PC Mall Inc, and filed a bankruptcy petition.
McMillan, who has also represented
Prince, Michael Jackson and Lil Kim, claims that Mays and Benzino never paid him for his services and is now seeking for the new owners to pay the $530,228 he says he's owed.
Villorente says he's owed $4,700 by the magazine, while PC Mall claims they are owed $28,000 for computer supplies.
For the past several months, Rhode Island-based investor Textron Financial, who owns 82% of The Source's shares, has been attempting to auction off their stake in the magazine. The firm loaned $18 million to the Source in 2002. As recently as yesterday, SOHH had received word that the magazine would be auctioned, but with the latest developments in bankruptcy court, The Source Enterprises Inc. could possibly be facing a liquidation sale.
Black Enterprise/Greenwich Street Partners also loaned the magazine money in 2002, and
after installing a new board of directors who removed Mays and Scott from power had been attempting to revive The Source. The bankruptcy petition filed by McMillan, VIllorente and PC Mall was not well received by Black Enterprise CEO Earl "Butch" Graves, Jr.
"Everyone who is a creditor will now have to come to the court and negotiate," Graves told the New York Post before calling McMillan "a disgruntled, unsecured creditor who was trying to have us negotiate with him outside of all the other creditors."

Do Or Die Rapper Charged With Murder, Girlfriend Charged With Witness Tampering

Belo, a member of the Chicago rap group Do or Die, has been charged in a murder case that took place in 2002, while his girlfriend is being charged for witness tampering.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the rapper (born Darnell Smith) is currently on trial for the death of Raynard Pinkston. Prosecutors allege that Belo shot and killed Pinkston in November of 2002.
However, the prosecution recently ran into some obstacles that may amount to witness tampering. According to the prosecution, there were eight or more witnesses to the shooting, but recently several have recanted prior testimonies to defense attorneys.
The Chicago Tribune reports that Felicia Hamilton, Belo's 34-year-old girlfriend, has been charged with two felony counts each of communication with a witness and obstruction of justice. Yesterday (July 27) Hamilton was ordered to be held without bail.
"There are four total witnesses who say they got paid off," Cook County Assitant State's Attorney Brian Sexton told the Chicago Tribune. "We suspect they all got paid off."
Hamilton became a witness tampering suspect in March, after allegedly paying $500 to one of the witnesses in Belo's case. After reporting the payoff to police, the witness wore a wire during another meeting with Hamilton where he was told "not to come to the trial" Sexton said.
Currently on probation for
possession of a controlled substance, Hamilton will appear in court again Tuesday (August 1) to face the obstruction of justice and communicating with a witness charges. A judge will determine whether her probation was violated in court on Wednesday (August 2).
Belo's group Do or Die is best known for their 1996 single "Po Pimp," which also featured fellow Chicago rapper
Twista. The group has released seven albums as well as a greatest hits set in the last decade. Last fall the group broke into the Top 40 hip-hop charts with their latest album, D.O.D.

Memphis, Tenn. rap group Three 6 Mafia has signed a lucrative three-year deal with Warner Bros. Records for its production company Hypnotize Minds Productions.
Under the new deal, made official last month and worth upwards of $30 million, Warner Bros. will market, promote, and distribute new HMP artists as well as work together on movies and
video games.
Additionally, Hypnotize Minds will produce for Warner Bros. artists.
"It feels good to still be signing big deals like this 11 years later," DJ Paul told AllHipHop.com. "A lot of people can’t do that, you know what I’m sayin. We blessed to be in the game so long and still have blessings like this come to the door."
Three 6's deal with Warner Bros. came about through the label's vice president of urban A&R and fellow Tennessee native Naim Ali. Warner’s ability to handle a
various tasks while promoting their artists was a plus, according to DJ Paul.
"I like the way Warner Bros. stayed behind their records and worked multiple singles and stuff, like Trillville and Scrappy and different artists that I’ve seen," DJ Paul said. "I like the way they did that and keep it rollin. Just keep pulling singles out the albums and pushin’ it. They distribute DVDs, so we could put
movies out through them too"
Fans can look for a slew of projects from Hypnotize Minds in the coming months. Juicy J revealed the company is in the process of signing a diverse group of artists while working with current artists Lil' Wyte and Chrome.
"Right now, we plan on signing some artists out of Memphis," Juicy J said. "A lot of artist out Memphis, a lot of artists out of Miami, New York, LA, Atlanta, Texas, all over the place. We just trying to sign a person from each different state, you know, so we can get different flavors because there’s all kinds of flavors in
rap. So we want to get different flavors. Rap groups, rock groups, R&B. It don’t matter. We don’t discriminate. We just try to keep the bills paid. So we want to work with everybody."
As for movies, the group revealed that they have finished writing the third movie in the Choices series, Choices III: The Return of Big Pat, as well as a feature titled The Streets of Memphis and another film on hip-hop.
"Be on the lookout for our DVDs, our independent DVDs," said Juicy J, who stated the group is still signed to Sony Records.
Three 6 has been actively seen on various shows and performing at events such as Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s 80th birthday party and MTV’s My Sweet Sixteen.
The group also makes an appearance in the upcoming Jackass 2 movie, which is due in theaters in September.
"We’ve been doing the same thing, the same sound, since 1990," Paul said. "It’s been working and we just kept it the same and all kinds of things been jumping off and been happening for us. We got the Oscar and all that. We did the big deal with Warner Bros. It’s been a big year. "Stay Fly" blew up. That’s like one of our first records to get like10,000 spins. Then we had the second single, 'Poppin’ My Collar,' that blew up. We never really had a lot of good luck with second singles. We always had strong first singles. Now we got a third single that’s blowin up, 'Side 2 Side.' So everything been looking good. This Warner Bros. deal has really just sealed it."

Star (born Troi Torain) was fired in May by New York's Power 105. FM for what the station's parent company, Clear Channel Radio, said were "wholly unacceptable" comments about rival,
DJ Envy.
Star was accused of making anti-Asian comments about DJ Envy's wife, Gia Casey. In addition to the comments, Star made remarks implying a threat of sexual abuse against the couple's four-year-old child and threatened to urinate on the girl.
He also offered $500 to any listener who provided details about where the girl went to school.
Star was arrested by detectives from the Hate Crimes Unit two days later and charged with harassment and endangering the welfare of a child.
Although Star apologized for the comments, his lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, said they were the culmination of a long-running verbal battle that had "spiraled out of control."
The charges against Star will be dropped if the 42-year-old on-air personality serves three days of community service and stays away from the four-year-old victim of his comments.
Star labeled the ruling a victory for freedom of speech.

Dallas DJ Says Lil' Wayne Song Sparked Shootout Not Lil Jon

A Dallas DJ who authorities claim to have played a Lil Jon song that sparked a nightclub shooting between rival gangs leaving two people dead and four others injured last weekend, has denied playing the song.
"That song wasn't even in my record crate or my
CD case," DJ Drop told The Dallas Morning News.
As previously reported,
two gangs -- one from East Dallas and the other from South Dallas -- were at the El Angel nightclub on Sunday (July 16) to attend a birthday party and had agreed to put their rivalry aside for the evening.
An hour later, Dallas police said Lil Jon's "Put Yo Hood Up" was played and the two gangs begun fighting, quickly emptying
the club. The skirmishing between the two groups continued outside and guns were eventually pulled out.
22-year-old Lendl Carey and 20-year-old Kenneth Haggerty were shot and killed. The injured were rushed were to a nearby hospital where they were treated and released.
Drop admits that he did play a Lil Jon song on the aforementioned night, but it was Jon's current hit ,"Snap Yo Fingers". According to Drop , the scuffle began when he played
Lil Wayne's "Money on My Mind".
"Any time that song plays, people start throwing money," said Karisten Brunfield, a friend of DJ Drop who was at El Angel that night. "There is a customary mad scramble for the loose bills. That happens every week when I'm there. If you throw it, you don't expect to get it back."
As soon as the crowd began to rustle, Drop claims he threw on the lights and told everyone to calm down. He said that when he noticed the security escorting the troublemakers out, he resumed playing
music for about a half-hour before the shootings occurred.
Despite Drop's denial of playing of the song, police insist that witnesses revealed to them that the playing of "Put Yo Hood Up" started trouble in the club.
"Multiple witnesses told our detectives that that song was what started the fight," explained Deputy Chief Alfredo Saldana. "How would we have gotten that song title if people hadn't told it to us? And the people at that club ought to know what they're hearing."
"Put Yo Hood Up," urges listeners to represent their neighborhoods via hand signs, has been linked to another murder in Arkansas.
A day after the shootings, police held a press conference and handed out copies of the song's lyrics and expressed frustration with Drop for playing the song in a club filled with gang members.
"There wasn't anything to indicate there were gang members in the club," emphasized Drop. "You couldn't look at anybody and say, 'That's a gang banger.' If that was the case, they wouldn't have been let in."
According to Drop , the fact that he was the DJ at El Angel that night has hurt his business. Two recent gigs have been canceled, he said.
"They didn't want the heat," he said. "They didn't know when it will blow over."
Authorities are still looking for shooters and no arrests have been made.

As Beeda puts it, "Turfology 101 is a lesson for those who want to know about Oakland's 'hood life, our swagger, our culture, the sideshows, the hyphy shit, and the hustle mentality. I touch on all of those subjects on my album." Tajai founded Clear Label Records in 1999 to provide a home for some of the most talented artists the rich Bay Area scene has to offer. Other artists on the label include emcee Shake Da Mayor, pop/rock singer Chris Marsol, and funk/RnB singer Baby James. Using his experience as both a successful artist and successful label owner, Tajai has big plans to take these artists to the next level. "Contrary to what people may think, I'm not anti-mainstream or anti-major label," explains Tajai. "When things start to pop off and the majors come knocking on our door to bring these hardworking talented artists out of the 'hood and into the TV screens and speakers of mainstream America, then I'll consider my job done." To Tajai, Clear Label Records is more than just making money - it's about enabling artists to make smart choices in their careers and lives.

Pharrell Invades NYC's Times Square

A humbled Pharrell waltzed into NYC's Virgin Megastore in Times Square yesterday evening (7/25) as hundreds of eager fans awaited his arrival. With the streeteam holding up signs and blowing whistles to alert passerby's of the new album, the line of fans that went around the block exuded excitement and anxiety. Pharrell's new CD In My Mind hit stores yesterday.
Inside,
DJ Absolut from New York's Hot 97 was spinning all the hottest Pharrell joints to keep the crowd amped while they waited for the man of the hour. With posters of a cartoon Pharrell plastered on every wall and all the TV screens playing various Pharrell video's it was clear who folks came out to see.
A very punctual Pharrell showed up right at 6pm after appearing on
MTV's TRL right across the street. His arrogant persona perceived in the music video's proved to be only for entertainment purposes. Girls cried and screamed and the boys gave pounds to a man they admire and respect. With that baby face, Pharrell could have been easily mistaken for one of his younger fans.

Method Man Talks Wendy Williams Incident

Wu Tang Clan lyricist Method Man is voicing his displeasure over radio personality Wendy Williams' on-air revelation about the health of his wife.
Williams recently broke news to her listeners that Method Man's wife has cancer. The rapper, who kept the status of his wife's health a secret, was angered by Williams' disregard for his privacy.
"Wendy gets on the air and said [Method Man] 'his wife is sick and she not doing too well,' and I'm like this f***king b***h man," Method Man told AllHipHop.com. "This [is] the big "C," big "C" [for cancer]. I was ready. I was so mad, I was crying right there and I'm like I'm gonna kill some f**king body and these [Wu Tang friends] kept me in there, kept me in L.A."
Since the show, Method Man has had to deal with increased exposure from the fallout.
According to the rapper, his wife, who is going through chemotherapy treatment, had not told family members about her battle with cancer.
Method Man's frustration continued to build upon hearing that Williams allegedly insinuated that he was having an affair with a doctor, who is treating his wife.
"She said me and [the doctor] was f**king. What kind of s**t is that, man?," he said. "You don't do that to nobody. You say the f**k you want to say about me, say nothing about my family, man."
The
drama comes as Method Man prepares for the August 29 release of his new album, 4:21...The Day After.

Thousands Of Fans Upset After Dem Franchise Boyz Miss South Carolina Concert Date

Atlanta Hip-Hop quartet Dem Franchize Boyz was a no show Friday (July 21) at an event which attracted 1,100 fans.
The group, under contract to perform at 10:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Civic Center in South Carolina, was the scheduled headliner for the four and a half hour event, which also featured a dance contest,
DJ and other groups.Although promoters informed the crowd at 11:20 p.m. that the group was on its way from Atlanta, they canceled the performance by 12:30 a.m. During that time, Dem Franchize Boyz was still on the road and in Elberton, Ga., according to the Index-Journal.
"They were paid to show up. They did not show up, and everybody blames us and the promoter," said Tracy Upton, vice president for operations at the Civic Center. "The promoter did one of the best jobs I've seen in a long time (getting word out about the show). Their crowd was here, but the headliners did not show up."
The no show marked the second time in eight years a Civic Center act was paid and failed to show up, remembered Upton, who called the situation "disappointing."
"I can't get them to answer the phone; my lawyer can't get them to answer the phone," said Johnson, who admitted that despite it being his first time working with Dem Franchize Boyz, the group isn't known for missing shows. "I think they've showed up at all their concerts."
Although, the crowd became "real rowdy" when they were told Dem Franchize Boyz would not perform, Reggie Johnson, the show's promoter, said the crowd "left because officers were there. They calmed down pretty quick."
When it was clear that Dem Franchize Boyz would not appear, extra security was called in by officers on duty at the civic center, added Upton.
Fans looking for refunds were out of luck. Johnson told the Index-Journal Tuesday (July 25) that all ticket revenues are with Dem Franchize Boyz' management.
As a result, he doesn't have any money for refunds. Parents demanding refunds at the Civic Center also came away empty-handed after learning the reason why they would not be compensated.
To make up for the mishap, Johnson's company, RRJ Productions, will hold a pool party and cookout for all ticket holders. The event will be 2 p.m. Saturday (July 29) at the R.L. Stevens Recreation Center on Seaboard Avenue. The event will be paid for by the company.
In addition to the pool party, Johnson mentioned a possible show in the future for ticket-holders to "keep the (company's) name good."

DMX Rejects Plea Deal, Says $25k Fine Is 'Not Fair'

Rapper DMX rejected a plea bargain for a recent White Plains traffic case Monday (July 24).
The New York lyricist (born Earl Simmons) cited unfair treatment as the reason behind his refusal. The acceptance of the plea bargain would have ended the case, according to the White Plains Journal News.
"I don't feel good about this at all,'' DMX said as he referenced the bail set by City Court Judge Barbara Leak. "It's not fair - $25,000 for traffic tickets? Come on. Let's keep it real.''
Leak set the bail after DMX did not appear for previous court dates. As a result, the wordsmith spent a night at the Westchester County Jail on June 30.
DMX was freed July 1 after
acting state Supreme Court Justice Richard Molea allowed him to post a $2,500 bond instead of cash bail.
The rapper remained quiet in court on Monday as his lawyer Murray Richman represented him.
Richman later revealed to the Journal News that Simmons refused a plea deal that was offered by the DA's office but did not reveal the details surrounding the offer.
DMX's snubbing is the latest in a saga that sprang from a June 2 arrest by police who said the 35-year-old rapper was speeding.
Authorities also discovered that Simmon's New York driver's license had been suspended. They later charged him with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, and issued tickets accusing him of speeding, seat-belt and unsafe lane change violations.
Leak, who adjourned the case until Aug. 25, said it is possible for conferences to be held in order to resolve the case without going to trial.
If DMX is convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 180 days in jail.
The incident is not the first traffic incident for DMX, who is set to appear in Harrison Town Court on August 29. The rapper pleaded not guilty to driving on the shoulder of the Hutchinson River Parkway to avoid a traffic jam.

Lil Jon Song Sparks Shootout, Two Men Killed

Dallas authorities have reason to believe that a nightclub shooting between rival gangs, which left two people dead and four others injured last weekend, was sparked by a Lil' Jon song.
According to Dallas Morning News, two gangs -- one from East Dallas and the other from South Dallas -- were at the El Angel nightclub on Sunday (July 16) to attend a birthday party and had agreed to put their rivalry aside for the evening.
An hour later, police say
Lil Jon's "Put Yo Hood Up" was played and the two gangs begun fighting, quickly emptying the club. The skirmishing between the two groups continued outside and guns were eventually pulled out.
22-year-old Lendl Carey and 20-year-old Kenneth Haggerty were shot and killed. The injured were rushed were to a nearby hospital where they were treated and released.
"Put Yo Hood Up," which urges listeners to represent their neighborhoods via hand signs, has been linked to another murder in Arkansas.
When police reports associating the murders to
hip-hop surfaced, Dallas based rappers and DJ's responded by voicing their outrage.
"It's crazy that police would say something like that," Mr. Pookie told the Morning News. "When alcohol is involved and tempers flare, shit happens. A song can't make somebody shoot someone."
"Dallas police have no business calling 'Put Yo Hood Up' a 'flashpoint' for violence," said DJ Big Bink of The Beat. "When they make statements like that, it shows how ignorant they are toward
hip-hop culture."
"The
songs played, they have nothing to do with nothing," Marcus Francia, the brother of the man whose birthday was being celebrated at the club told the Associated Press. "I've been to a lot of clubs, and they play the same songs at every club. I don't think that would prompt nobody."
Authorities are still looking for shooters.

Russell Simmons, Dr. Benjamin Chavis Named U.N. Goodwill Ambassadors

Hip-Hop Summit Action Network chairman Russell Simmons and HSAN president/CEO Dr. Benjamin Chavis will be inducted Tuesday (July 25) as CISRI-ISP Permanent Observer Missionaries to the United Nations Goodwill Ambassadors program. CISRI-ISP is Rome-based intergovernmental institution that helps fight against malnutrition and extreme hunger in various countries around the globe. The new position will mark the official launch of an awareness campaign that will use Hip-Hop to address war, poverty and HIV/AIDS, in support of the UN's Millennium Development Goals and the CISRI-ISP's fight against severe poverty and malnutrition. "The underlying goal of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network is to end poverty and ignorance," Simmons said, adding the appointments will "significantly enhance" HSAN's global reach to further fulfill the mission. "We're going to help save lives. We will not be silenced in the face of the awful fact that more than 40,000 people die every day from malnutrition and poverty," Simmons said. "That is unacceptable to the Hip-Hop community." D. Anthony "Chip" Lumar, a managing partner with Pinnacle International Partners, Inc. will join Simmons and Chavis as a UN goodwill ambassador, in addition to Gary Foster, chairman of Upliftment Jamaica, H.R.H. Luna Al-Husseini Abu Khadra and Meera T. Gandhi. Chavis sees the appointments as an asset in expanding HSAN's effectiveness domestically and internationally. "Hip-Hop culture is global and, as we strive to take back responsibility, the life saving issues of ending poverty and malnutrition are most urgent," he said. Knowing how challenging it will be to help eliminate poverty and malnutrition, the inductees vow to take an active role in meeting the objective. "Our job is to wake more people up to this reality," said Chavis. "Being a Goodwill Ambassador is not just ceremonial. We're rolling up our sleeves and look forward to working with the United Nations on these issues." The induction ceremony will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the UNCA Club room, United Nations Secretary Building, Headquarters, 3rd floor.
