UCLA Recruits Industry Big Wigs For Hip-Hop Leadership Camp
Next week UCLA will open its doors to thirty inner city youth taking part in an extensive four day music business apprenticeship. MC Lyte, Chino XL and MTV's Sway are among entertainment industry representatives taking part in the 2nd Annual Hip-Hop Leadership Camp (HHLC).
The camp hopes to promote leadership and empowerment among at-risk youth by introducing them to entertainment, communication and technology industries. The camp provides students with new career tools, offering workshops delivered by DJs, radio personalities, musicians, video producers, business managers, lawyers, accountants and marketing and A&R reps.
"This camp is more than just a series of classes," Karen Levy, HHLC founder said via statement, "The personal interaction and application of the skills acquired in the program gives them the chance to experience their potential as future leaders by using their love of hip-hop and entertainment as a learning tool."
After the conclusion of HHLC students are invited to continue in a mentorship program, promising students an internship in the entertainment field of their choice provided they maintain grade point averages of 2.5 or better and graduate from high school.
Rapper E-40 and tattoo artist Mister Cartoon were present at last year's camp. This year speakers include, MC Lyte, Sway, Chino XL, The Game's DJ, DJ Skee, Billboard Magazine Sr. Editor Gail Mitchell, UCLA hip-hop business professor Gary Jackson, hip-hop journalist Davey D, radio personalities Luscious Liz (Power 106) and Poetess (100.3 the Beat), among many others.
The entire week of HHLC activities is focused on team building, goal setting and leadership development through the hip-hop culture and entertainment industry. For more details visit: www.HipHopLeadershipCamp.com.
