Puerto Rico Stand Up...Tego Calderon Preps Album, Stars in John Singleton Flick
Reggaeton superstar Tego Calderón is scheduled to unveil his next album at the end of this month and an upcoming film role in 2007.
The album, The Underdog/El Subestimado hits stores on August 29th and will be released through Calderón's label Jiggiri Records, which is distributed by Atlantic records. The Underdog, which has been described by Calderón as "a musical journey through the Afro-Caribbean culture," features elements of traditional bomba puertorriqueña, reggae, blues, salsa and Cuban rumba.
Featuring appearances from Buju Banton, Eddie Dee & Voltio, Yandel, Chyno Nyno, Don Omar and salsa legend Oscar D'León, The Underdog also has includes production from Salaam Remi (Nas, The Fugees), Major League, DJ Nelson and Danny among others. Fornaris. The DJ Nesty & Naldo produced "Los Maté" has been chosen as the album's first single.
Since bursting on the Latin rap scene in 2002 with his hugely popular album El Abayarde, Tego has been embraced by audiences worldwide. In addition to working with Latin stars like Roselyn Sánchez, Toño Rosario and Aventura, Tego has lent his unique style to collaborations with hip-hop artists including Fat Joe, Usher, 50 Cent, Cypress Hill and Wyclef Jean.
Tego Calderón is also set to make his big screen debut in 2007, picking up a role in the John Singleton produced drama Illegal Tender, which was written and directed by Empire screenwriter Franc Reyes. The film also stars Rick Gonzalez, Wanda DeJesus and Dania Ramirez.
In related news, Tego will join LL Cool J, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, The Foo Fighters and Yerba Buena in rocking NYC's Heineken AmsterJam. The concert is being held on Randall's Island on August 19th.
