The Roots Unveil "Game Theory," Reunite With Malik B
The Roots unveiled their 7th studio album, Game Theory, at Sony Studios in New York City last night (June 15).
Group members Black Thought, ?uestlove and affiliate Dice Raw were in attendance while Jay-Z, Def Jam A&R/engineer Young Guru and mixtape DJ J. Period made brief appearances. Contrary to previous reports, the set doesn't feature guest spots from Saigon, Talib Kweli or Mos Def. Instead, the album boasts a verse from Dice and estranged Roots member Malik B returns to the fold on three tracks. Malik hasn't appeared on a Roots album since 1999's Things Fall Apart.
The LP marks the legendary's first release on Def Jam. After releasing Organix independently in 1993, the group dropped five studio albums through Geffen and MCA. To date they've released 1995's Do You Want More, 1996's Illadelph Halflife,1999's Things Fall Apart, 2002 Phrenology and 2004's The Tipping Point.
In related news, the Roots recently embarked on a nationwide tour to support Game Theory. The tour kicked off at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO (June 5) and is slated to conclude at Boston, MA's Avalon (August 7).
The Roots' Game Theory is scheduled to hit stores August 29th.
